When did VW Euro vans came into market?

VW are also called as Euro vans. Production of Euro van was started in the year 1992 in Europe. It was introduced in USA as a 1993 model as a passenger van and MV model weekenders with and without pop-top. The full version Euro van camper van was introduced in USA in 1995.

VW pop top model was known as Westfalia Weekender Multi-Van (MV). These vehicles were considered same as hard top passenger vans, the difference being interior and pop-top installed by Westfalia. Weekender does not have sink, frig or stove but has two-rear facing seats. One seat is fixed behind the driver with an electric cooker under it (pop top versions only) and other seat is fixed behind the passenger seat. The features of 1993-1996 models are Audi in-line 5-cylinder, 2.5 liter and 130 hp power engines. This MV Euro van was discontinued in 1995 and again introduced in 1999 with a VR6 and stayed basically unchanged through end of production in 2003.

Full camper vans were available in 1995 in USA and were known as Winnebago camper conversions. Full VW Camper vans were delivered to Winnebago bare inside, but loaded with comfort options which were installed before by VW. Winnebago would install other features like pop top, sink, stove, frig, cabinets, furnace and side windows. All Euro van Winnebago campers had gray interiors.

In 1997 VW switched to VR6 which is 2.8 liter, 15 degree V6. It is known as “VR”. All VR6 Euro vans have 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transaxles. The term electronically controlled means that a computer, wiring and electric solenoids are all involved in telling the transmission when to shift and which gear to shift into.  This new engine is more powerful and more efficient. Interiors were in grey color and the fabric used in seats where changed from thin-stripped design to little triangles. Again in 2000 it changed to circular pattern. Other minor interior changes were made like better interior lighting was provided. In 1997 another thing was introduced like dual air bags and then came the steering wheel. But glove box did disappear.

Other changes in 2001 were VR6 jumped in HP to 204, but the engine size did not change. It remained a 2.8 liter engine. Cylinder head was re-designed to include 24 valves instead of only 12, and camshaft timing became variable and computer controlled. Engine also improved, it shifted to drive by wire system and multiple coil ignition. Even though HP jumped to 64HP, torque went up only 8 ft-lbs to 188 ft-lbs. Other changes that were made in 2001 are as follows: 15 inch road wheel was replaced with 16-inch wheel, rear sway bar was added, rear suspension was raised to 1 inch and brakes were improved. Interiors were same as 2000 model.
