Towable RV Choices

What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a towable RV? As more and more people get interested in the RV lifestyle, many are probably wondering which type of RV is the best for them. A towable RV can be a good choice in many situations but it is not for everyone. Before you make a major investment into any type of motorized or towable RV you should weigh your options to see which the best is for you.

Towable RV Choices:

Tent trailer: As one of the smallest of the towables, this is an inexpensive choice which appeals to many. You can simply hitch it up to any full-size car, truck or SUV and go. Some are even large enough to accommodate as many as 6 people in them and they have a basic kitchen and lavatory.

Slide in camper: Another of the small towable RV models is the slide in camper which “slides in” to the back of a pickup truck. You would need to buy or own a pickup, but you would be able to take this RV virtually anywhere your truck could go-making it ideal for the solo adventurer.

Travel trailer: A travel trailer is one of the larger towable RV models. They can be anywhere from less than 20 feet to over 30 feet. You may be able to sleep several people in one. They have various amenities and some of the more expensive ones are quite luxurious. You will need a larger tow vehicle to pull this towable RV and it can be difficult to maneuver.

Fifth Wheel: These are a little easier to maneuver than a regular travel trailer because of the hitch. But, you would need to outfit your pickup with a hitch for this fifth wheel. They have slightly more cabin space without adding length at the back.

Advantages: Better gas mileage and the convenience of having your tow vehicle to get around are some of the advantages of this type of RV. It is also more stable in the wind.

Disadvantages: You will not be able to tow a boat or another vehicle behind a towable and they are not as big or luxurious. You will also have to hitch and unhitch them.
